5 Minute Challenge

#5MinuteChallenge

A lot of people struggle to get started on their health and fitness goals, for many reasons, but some of the biggest reasons are here:

• not knowing how to start
• not knowing where to start
• intimidated by the gym
• they look at the end goal as impossible, so never start
• not having any accountability
• lack of motivation to start, or a reason that is bigger than their excuses to get started
• they get burnt out from doing too much, too soon
• they don’t have time
• they lack the confidence
• they get frustrated when the scale does not move immediately and stop

And many, many other reasons.

We continue to tell ourselves little lies, that prevent us from truly getting started. Even if we have done all the tricks the gurus, and influencers have told us to do to “get a body like theirs”. We create this entire list of things to set us up for failure, and to keep us from doing the most important thing in our journey, to just get started.

Start small.

You don’t have to go to the gym every single day for results. You don’t have to go to the gym 5 times a week for results. You don’t have to work out for 2 hours a day for results, or even an hour or half an hour. You can start seeing results with just 5 minutes of extra movement a day.

What can 5 minutes of extra movement look like?

• go for a 5 minute walk, around your neighborhood, on your lunch break, around your house even, just get up and dedicate just 5 minutes to walking daily.
• create a 5 minute circuit you can do in the comfort of your own home
– 1 minute alternating forward lunges, 1 minute alternating reverse lunges, 1 minute alternating side lunges, 1 minutes squats and 1 minute jumping jacks (incredible leg circuit to get the heart rate up, sweat a little, and challenge the body and burn some calories)
– 1 minute glute(floor) bridges, 1 minute dead bugs, 1 minute bird dogs, 1 minute mountain climbers, 1 minute plank (great core circuit that you can do daily)

Often overlooked is the little movements we do daily, when we are not at the gym, are not at work, and while we are home.

Ways to implement:

• schedule yourself 5 minutes a day, to get up and move
• feeling bored, get up and move
• just finished a TV show, movie, etc., get up and move for 5 minutes
• working from home, just finished a specific task, or big job/project, reward yourself by getting up to move for 5 minutes…

The point being, your journey does not have to start in a gym, does not have to start with 30 min, 60 min or 2 hour workouts that you’ll end up hating and likely injure yourself from.

Start small, just 5 minutes, and see where the journey takes you. Increase to 10 minutes when you are comfortable and your schedule allows. Can you commit to just 5 minutes of movement a day to change your life?
